This is for a contest that the lovely Julie Kagawa is holding for her Iron Fey Series so if you haven't read it you probably shouldn't read this.
• First off I love his name. Actually I love all the Winter Prince’s names and the whole plant theme they have going on.
• Sage isn’t the same as his brothers. He is more straight forward, not really looking for entertainment or to trick someone. This just really sets him apart from not just his family but the entire fey society. It is really an admirable trait. Also when he is talking to Meghan he is trying to help her. He doesn’t really care one way or another though. He can give her advice, but if she doesn’t want to listen it isn’t his problem.
o “I will not force you, Princess. Come with me or not, it makes no difference. I merely wanted to speak to you without Rowan, Ash, or some phouka trying to eavesdrop on the conversation” (Kagawa 57).
o “Sage seemed straightforward, almost businesslike” (Kagawa 58).
• I realize the wolf is kinda separate from Sage but I don’t care. He has a wolf. It is trained. I have a feeling about the wolf though that he is trained to obey his master but is still on the edge of savagery almost like the rest of the court and fey in general. I love it I have two dogs. They don’t listen to me at all really, unless food is being offered. Whereas Sage was able to take a wolf and train it and it is completely loyal to him. I have a feeling that if I was ever attacked y a horde of Iron fey my dogs would give up pretty quickly.
o “Limping, I ran over to Sage, passing the body of the poor wolf, sprawled out next to him. The wolf’s jaws gaped open, and a tongue lolled out between bloody teeth. It had died protecting its master” (Kagawa 65).
o “His wolf sat a few paces away, watching me with intelligent golden eyes” (Kagawa 57)
• The way he protects Meghan. When the Iron fey attack Sage first and foremost is trying to protect Meghan. She drops the scepter and it goes out of her reach. Instead of stopping the fey heading for the scepter he stops the ones heading for Meghan. Ok yes I know he should be protecting her. She is a prisoner of the court and Mab will be super angry if something happened to her. But, I think she would be even angrier if the scepter got stolen and Meghan remained unharmed. Actually Mab probably wouldn’t be angry about the loss of a pawn more like mildly inconvenienced, because about 10 minutes later she freezes Meghan to keep her out of her way.
o “The scepter dropped from my grasp and rolled away. Dazed, I watched the faery scuttle toward me but suddenly jerk to a stop, as if yanked by invisible strings. Ice covered its body” (Kagawa 63).
• His death. This actually killed me a little on the inside. Here we have this character that has been in such a small portion of the story, and I was heartbroken when he died. I mean I know this is irrational but I was seriously hoping that another ice prince cold join our lovely little group. Or at least help Meghan and the others in some way along their journey. But no. He died. Bottom line I was really upset especially since at the time he was my favorite ice prince. His death was just extremely honorable as well. He died to protect his kingdom and the Never-never in general. He basically faced a small army single handedly, in fight he probably knew he couldn’t win.
o “My stomach twisted as the prince staggered, swinging his blade in a desperate circle to keep the assassins back. There were too many for him, and they were too quick” (Kagawa 62).
• Overall significance- When you think about if Sage hadn’t died so many of the events in The Iron Daughter wouldn’t have happened. Ash probably wouldn’t have had to betray Mab, and who knows how long Meghan would have had to stay before she escaped. Who knows if Ash would’ve gone with her or what would have happened.
• Well there you have it a way over 150 word explanation of why I love Prince Sage. Sorry if I rambled <3
Haiku time:
Sage, heir of winter
Will be but the first to fall
By the iron fey
I am terribly sorry that my art does not do him justice, but I tried.
